Chana Dal recipe is a tasty and healthy dal recipe that is served with rice and roti/chapati. Chana Dal is also known as Bengal Gram. You can also cook this Chana Dal with other healthy vegetables like Dal-Palak (spinach), Dal-Loki (ghiya), or also with split black dal. Personally I like this Chana Dal with split black dal. It is also called Maah Cholle Ki Dal. Chana Dal Pulao is another meal you can cook for lunch or for dinner. There are a lot of dishes that you can make with this Chana Dal.

Here on this blog post, I am going to talk about the recipe of Chana Dal, this dal is not only tastes good but also has a lot of health benefits. This Chana Dal has a very low glycemic index and high fiber that’s why this lentil is beneficial for a diabetic and also helps to lower the bad cholesterol level. It is a good source of protein for vegetarians. Besan (gram flour) is also made up of this Dal. Besan is basically a powder form of Chana Dal. This is how Channa Dal looks like (see the picture below).

This protein-rich dal is also so easy to make. Here I am going to share an easy recipe of Chana Dal that you can easily make it and serve it with jeera rice and hot chapati. This dal is commonly made in my house, my mother simply made it just like other vegetables. I mostly prefer this dal at lunch with jeera rice, salad.

For making this Dal, you have to soak it in lukewarm water for an hour. After that cook it in the pressure cooker. After that, prepare tempering for this dal. Now add cooked dal in the tempering. Tasty recipe of Chana Dal is now ready to serve it with roti, naan, parantha, steamed rice, or jeera rice whatever you want to like.

Ingredients

  • 200 gm Chana Dal
  • ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 Finely chopped medium size onions
  • 1 Chopped Tomato
  • 2 chopped green chilli
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • ½ tbsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Powder (Dhania Powder)
  • Salt (as per your taste)
  • 1 tbsp garam masala

Instructions

How to cook Chana Dal

  • Firstly, you have to wash and soak Chana dal atleast for an hour in enough water.
  • After that, transfer soaked dal (lentils) in the pressure cooker and add ½ tsp of baking soda and salt (as per taste) in the cooker.
  • Wait for 1 whistle.
  • After 1 whistle Dal is completely cooked you check with help of fingers by mashing some of dal.
  • Then, separate dal water from dal. That water is we used in making curry for dal (lentils).
  • Now. it's time to prepare to temper for dal (lentils).

How to make temper for Dal (Lentils)

  • Heat Kadai and add 2 tbsp of oil in it.
  • Then add 1 tsp of cumin seeds in it.
  • Now add chopped onions. let it cook until it changes the color into golden brown.
  • When onions are completely cooked then add 1 chopped tomato, and chopped green chilli in it. Mix it and let the tomato completely cooked.
  • Now add 1 tbsp of coriander powder, 1 tsp of red chilli powder, ½ tbsp of turmeric powder and salt. You have added salt in little less amount because we already add salt in cooked dal. Mix it well.
  • Now, add cooked dal in the tempering.
  • Mix it well and add that dal water in the kadai.
  • Let it boil for 5 minutes.
  • Now, roughly mash dal with the help of the steel masher and add 1 tbsp of garam masala in it.
  • After mashing let it boil for 5 minutes. Now turn off the gas and serve it with Chapati, Jeera rice whatever you want.
